TEL AVIV, Israel — Fewer than half of products for pets tested recently by Leafreport contained the advertised amount of cannabidiol (CBD).
Leafreport, an online resource dedicated to CBD, sent 55 CBD products for independent testing at Canalysis Laboratories, a Las Vegas-based cannabis testing lab.
In total, only 24 of the 55 products tested (44%) contained the advertised amount of CBD. The rest were off by anywhere from 10.2% to 98.5% from the label, Leafreport said, attributing the errors to pet products including multiple product categories and also containing smaller amounts of CBD, making it more difficult to maintain consistency.
Key findings:
- 56% (31 products) of the tested products had CBD levels that differ from the label by more than the acceptable 10% variance.
- Most of the products (58%) had more CBD than advertised.
- Pet edibles and topicals are usually less accurate than oils and tinctures.
- Despite scoring well for tinctures, many companies received a poor score for their edible pet products.
- 22 of the tested products had no THC, despite companies claiming they contained full-spectrum CBD.
- 24 (44%) of the tested products had CBD levels within 10% of the label, which is required for an A rating.
Leafreport, which recently surveyed owners’ thoughts on CBD products for their pets, measured the accuracy of CBD pet products by comparing how much CBD they should have to the amount shown on the third-party lab test reports.
While some variation is expected from a natural product like hemp-derived CBD, it should still be within reasonable levels, Leafreport said, adding that industry experts recommend cannabis products contain cannabinoid levels within 10% of the advertised amount.
Using this 10% cutoff, Leafreport assigned CBD pet products one of four ratings to represent their accuracy:
- A (Excellent): Independent lab tests showed CBD levels that were within 10% of what was stated on the label.
- B (Decent): Independent lab tests showed CBD levels that were within 20% of the label.
- C (Poor): Independent lab tests showed CBD levels that were within 30% of the label.
- F (Fail): Independent lab tests showed CBD levels that differed from the label by more than 30%.
